How employee turnover is calculated

Turnover rate = number of leavers / average headcount x 100

The calculator uses the opening and closing employee numbers to calculate average headcount: (opening headcount + closing headcount) / 2.

Using the result

Turnover is a management information measure rather than a statutory HR measure. For meaningful comparisons, use the same definition of employee, leaver and measurement period each time.

If headcount changes significantly during the period, the simple midpoint method may not represent the true average headcount. Organisations with detailed workforce data may prefer an average based on regular headcount observations.
