Not long ago, I worked with an organisation that experienced a serious data breach. Personal employee information had been accessed by an external attacker due to a security vulnerability. The leadership team was understandably concerned—not only about the legal implications but about the trust of their people and customers.
We acted quickly and transparently, using the following approach to respond, rebuild confidence, and strengthen future defences.
Step 1: Understand the Scope of the Breach
We immediately launched an internal investigation to determine how the breach had occurred, what data was affected, and which systems were compromised. We also assessed the risks—both for the individuals affected and for the wider organisation, including regulatory and reputational impacts.
